Leading eco store Biome has introduced to the Australian market, Loop Cup by Hevea; a completely biodegradable menstrual cup made from 100% natural rubber providing a plastic and waste free option for conscious consumers.

Environmentalist and founder of Biome, Tracey Bailey, said one of the most successful ways to reduce waste from sanitary products is to opt for a reusable product, like menstrual cups.

“Menstrual cups are not a new invention; they have been around since the 1930s, though back then they were made with hard rubber. Now, there is a range of menstrual cups on the market made from flexible medical grade silicone,” she said.

“Loop Cup, on the other hand, is completely biodegradable as it is made from 100% natural rubber. At the end of its life, it can be placed in a compost bin or buried in the garden saving the waste of the cup itself and thousands of disposable sanitary items.”

According to the US Department’s Office on Women’s Health, the average woman menstruates for 40 years and in that time, it is estimated she will use between 9,600 and 11,000 tampons.

In Australia, more than 660 million disposable feminine products end up in landfill every year.

“It is not just the pad or tampon itself that causes environmental problems – plastic applicators, tampon sleeves and pad packaging all add up to the many tonnes of waste that is produced by these products. It takes a tampon or pad centuries longer to degrade in landfill than the lifespan of the woman who used it, particularly when wrapped in a plastic wrapper or bag,” said Ms Bailey.

“Another environmental impact to consider is the process of manufacturing these products – turning wood pulp into soft, cotton-like fibres – requires significant chemicals and resources, placing a heavy burden on our natural environment.

“Menstrual cups are simply washed and reused, and, with proper care, can last for several years and save users an average of $90 per year, or $3,300 in a lifetime.”

Loop Cup has been designed by women and directly developed on various user’s experiences and wishes for the ideal menstrual cup.

As Loop Cup is made from natural rubber, it is softer and more flexible than silicone menstrual cups making it easier to fold and insert, as well as more comfortable to wear.

Available in three sizes, Loop Cup offers up to 12 hours of protection. Its unique loop stem makes it easy to remove; it has an anti-suction design making it safe to use for those with intrauterine devices (IUDs); and comes with a unique handmade storage pouch.

Loop Cup retails for AUD$59.95 and is available at Biome. International shoppers can purchase it here.
